Whoever visits Chiang Mai cannot miss the famous Night Bazaar. This evening and night market, together with the Sunday market, is an important tourist attraction in the North of Thailand.

The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar or Night Bazaar for short (Thai: ไนท์บาซาร์, Nai Basa) is easy to find at Chang Klan Road between Tha Pae Road and Si Donchai Road. When you are in the center of Chiang Mai the night market is within walking distance. The locals call the market 'Kad Luang', which means Royal Market in Thai.

Festively lit market stalls

Early in the afternoon the market vendors start to build up the 'shops'. As soon as darkness falls, a huge string of festively lit stalls emerges. The narrow paths create a cozy atmosphere and you can easily take a few hours to visit the market. Originally, the market was created by Chinese traders who wanted to sell their wares there. Today, it is the Thais who assert their trading spirit. Residents of villages in the vicinity of Chiang Mai in particular live on the proceeds of the Night Bazaar. The villages of San Kampaeng and Bor Sang are known for the many crafts and beautiful goods that you can find at the night market.

Handicrafts and crafts

Although you can also buy the usual trinkets you find everywhere in Thailand at the Night Bazaar, such as imitation brand items, watches and DVDs, you can also buy really special items. Think of silk, hand-painted parasols, wood carvings, handmade dolls, toys, jewelry and much more. So it is worth taking the time to walk through all the stalls.

Street artists

As in many markets, there is also entertainment in the form of street performers and musicians. You will find excellent restaurants on the market itself and in the immediate vicinity. If you have become tired from strolling, you can get a relaxing foot massage in the open air. Afterwards you will have enough energy to once again marvel at all the wonderful souvenirs, gifts and trinkets that make The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar so famous.
